Review: Skyward Novellas
There are only a handful of novellas that I have read but this question comes to mind whenever I am planning on reading a novella. Are novellas necessary? For one thing, they can be like the cherry on top or they can provide more insights not included in the main series. Some follow specific background characters or Novellas can have multiple purposes in my opinion but my one criteria is that they bring the reader closer to the series it is based off of.
The most recent novellas that I have read are the Skyward Novellas and WOW π«. These novellas are top-tier but here’s the caveat, they are kind of a must read. They are strategically placed and they provide so much information that are important to know about before finishing the series. Should novellas be a must read? I say, no and only because some people ignore novellas. Missing out on vital information from novellas can be make the rest of the series confusing.
Sunreach and ReDawn are to be read after Starlight (book 2) and Evershore is to be read alongside Cytonic (book 3).
π¨Spoilers Aheadπ¨
Sunreach (#2.1) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
After reading about Spensa’s spy adventures in Starlight, it was so nice to jump back into Detritus and understand what was simulaneously happening there with the crew we love so much. I missed the crew! FM and the others watch as a delver hangs over their planet and then mysteriously disappears due to Spensa’s awesomeness. Jorgen finds a collective of Taynix and we learn what their purpose is. It was suprising to find out that the Taynix are THE hyperdrives. And can we talk about FM & RIG!!! Finally, more romance! They are cute, the Taynix are cute and overall it was such a fun read. I love that even though FM is not a cytonic, that we know of, she’s still able to connect with the Taynix!
“I feel I should tell you,” Jorgen said over the radio, “that I now have a slug on each shoulder and three on my lap, all seeming vaguely uncomfortable that I’m touching them. I blame you, FM.” “Be more gentle,” I said. “Quit squeezing”. ππ
ReDawn (#2.2) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was definitely a 5 star read! I enjoyed every minute of it! I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Alanik but she’s actually so wise, caring, and a deliberately strategic. Alanik stands for what is right and won’t be bullied to be a blind follower or believer. I loooooved reading how her perception of the humans changed throughout the novella. Her thought processes totally made sense and she was continuously assessing for their intentions and integrity and I am so glad they earned her respect. Jorgan and the Skyward flight were so brave and they did not hesitate to accept Alanik or to help her people on ReDawn. I would be completely happy if Alanik is a permanent member of the crew for the rest of the series.
The biggest surprises included learning that Cobb might be a cytonic and that Gran-gran can hyper-jump. I don’t know if I like the idea of Cobb being a cytonic but it makes sense they more of them are going to be discovered. Lastly, my heart broooooke when Jorgen’s parents died in that Superiority trap ship.
Some many wonderful quotes from ReDawn:
“Everyone had something they weren’t willing to sacrifice.”
“Okay. Humans definitely got unreasonably embarrassed about relationships. It was amazing their species managed to survive.” ππ
“Arturo nodded, staring out at the miasma again. I liked the way he thought about things. The fact that he did think about them, while so many people on both his planet and mine were willing to swallow the easy story without worrying about whether it was a true one.” {I ship them π}
“I’d misjudged Jorgen. He was an incredible leader, and it was a privilege to fly with him.” {How sweet! I love how much respect she has gained for the humans!}
Evershore (#3.1)
** I have yet to read this. I will be reading it alongside Cytonic as recommended. I am sooooooo excited for Jorgen’s perspective but I also know that it’s going to be too sad because his parents just died.
